Background

History
The Success for All Middle-School is a model of middle school reform based on Success for All (SFA) and Roots & Wings—proven programs of elementary school reform operating in mostly high-poverty Title I schools across the country. Extensive research on these programs has found consistent positive effects on student reading performance, reductions in special education placement and discipline referrals, and many other outcomes.

Research suggests that children in the middle grades learn best when:

• Learning communities remain small and supportive
• Cooperative learning strategies are used throughout the day
• Curriculum content is both meaningful and challenging
• Family and community play an active role in education
• Responsive support systems are in place to assist students
• Programs exist to ease students’ transition into and out of the middle grades
